Hey Food Idiom!

Idioms!
WHAT did you call me?!
No, no, no…idioms, food idioms to be exact. Those quaint little sayings that convey a message, albeit a rather strange message sometimes…Ever wonder where they all come from? And why is it that so many are about food?
Cut the mustard, Cool as a Cucumber, Flat as a Pancake, Tough Nut to Crack, Full of Beans, Spill the Beans, Walking on Eggshells, Two Peas in a Pod, Half Baked, Piece of Cake, Taking Candy From a Baby, Pie in the Sky, Bringing Home the Bacon, The Big Cheese, Buttering someone up, A Good Egg, A Bad Egg, Got Bigger Fish to Fry, Ride the Gravy Train, and That’s How the Cookie Crumbles….
Well, it turns out they’re very difficult for some to derive from where they came originally. Some make perfect sense and others none at all! Bottom line is, there are so many because we love food so much it’s been incorporated into the very fabric of our language.
Stay tuned as we bring you the history and meanings behind some of these foodie sayings.

This Week’s Featured Draught

Jimmy’s Famous offers a special brew that rotates once a week for $5.50. This week we are pouring Point Reyes Porter from Marin Brewery. Like the old Porters of Ireland, this Porter is super rich and velvety. It is deep brown in color, with richly roasted and chocolately flavors. Like all Marin Brewing Co. Ales, this contains no preservatives is not heat-pasturized.

“Marin Brewing Point Reyes Porter is a rich chocolate opaque brown and this is good indicator as to the flavour that follows the pour. Roasted coffee bean and dark cocoa are at the forefront here, and their rich bitterness is very satisfying and extremely moreish. There is a touch of chocolaty sweetness on the finish, but only enough to balance the enjoyable bitter notes that rounds this beer off nicely. This is a supremely drinkable porter that slips down without any trouble at all, so even the large 650 ml bottle seems to disappear far too quickly.” The Beer Wrangler

But you’ll have to come in and try it for yourself! Get in here!

Mustard: The Other Condiment

Just like pork plays second fiddle to chicken, mustard always takes second place to ketchup. But can you imagine a grilled dog or burger without it? Or deviled eggs, or potato salad? It even adds that nice piquant flavor when added to your favorite BBQ sauce. Now I know what you mustard haters are thinking out there…yuk! We say this to you, thank you! Just means more for us American mustard lovers! Your loss is our gain and thatʼs just fine by us.

Interesting mustard facts:

Americans use more mustard than any other country in the world.

To say can’t cut the mustard means to that one doesn’t have what it takes to do something

Mean Mr. Mustard is a song from the Beatles album, Abbey Road written by John

Per capita consumption of mustard in the US is about 12 oz. annually

Nutrition-wise, a serving of mustard (1 teaspoon) has less than 20 calories, no sugar, no fat, and only 55mg of sodium

Honey mustard is simply a blend of mustard and honey, used as a sandwich topping, dip, marinade, or in salad dressings

America’s favorite condiment!

Call it catsup, katsup manis, tomato sauce, sweet and sour tomatoes…here in the good olʼ US of A we call it most often Ketchup. Itʼs by far our most popular condiment. And even if we didnʼt ʻinventʼ it, a matter apparently in much dispute, by golly weʼve sure as heck perfected it!

Put it on fries, burgers, dogs, scrambled eggs, steaks (donʼt worry what that chef thinks) heck in college you can even make ʻsoupʼ out of it!

Here is some ketchup trivia for you:
-97% of American homes keep ketchup in their kitchen
-Each person eats about 3 bottles a year
-As with wines, there are good and bad ketchup years depending on how sweet and flavorful the tomato harvest is
-A tablespoon of ketchup has 16 calories and no fat

So next time you are dressing a hot dog you can impress your buddies with all of this new knowledge!

Beer Goggles

Yes, we all know what beer goggles are, but what about beer glasses? Are you using the proper glassware to serve your beer in? And yes, that does mean drinking a Blue Pabst Ribbon out of a can and brown paper bag. But what about a imperial stout or a belgian ale? Just like wine, beer needs the proper glassware. Here’s a few popular examples of glassware to get you started:

Goblet: The wide mouths of these beer goblets and chalices are perfect for head retention.  Great for enjoying your favorite Belgian and Trappist ales.

Mug: Great for all beer types this glassware is more        festive than anything. Who doesn’t like swinging a mug of beer and saying cheers with their friends?

Pilsner: This tall slender glass is great for showcasing color, clarity and carbonation. In addition it promotes head retention. The next time you are in the mood for a pilsner or other type of lager this is your go-to glass.

Tulip: While it may look delicate this is a hard working glass! It captures and enhances volatiles, while it induces and supports large foamy heads. A no brainer for ales.

Of course there are many more glasses in the world of beer and these are just a few of them. And don’t feel you need to run out and stock up for your next football party because a pint glass will do just fine. Cheers!

Life’s a Picnic…

Looking for something different and fun to do this weekend? Why not explore your backyard in Point Loma and check out the Sunset Cliffs. Start out at Jimmy’s Famous and order some lunch to-go like our famous burgers or fish and chips. Unfortunately our beer can’t leave the restaurant!

Then drive down to the Sunset Cliffs, which lie on the west side of the Point Loma Peninsula. Find a picnic bench and enjoy your lunch while watching wildlife, sunbathers and creatures swimming in the tide pools.

Just make sure all your trash gets in the garbage and not the ocean!
